Description

Water can be one of the hardest subjects to paint because, effectively, it's not there. A clear substance only leaves evidence by its reflections and its effects. It's also likely to be constantly moving, yet a painting has to freeze it in the moment without looking like a photograph.

Water can be one of the hardest subjects to paint because, effectively, it's not there. A clear substance only leaves evidence by its reflections and its effects. It's also likely to be constantly moving, yet a painting has to freeze it in the moment without looking like a photograph.

This wonderfully varied book features 24 outlines you can trace down to get the basic composition, thus freeing you to concentrate on the use of colour and brushwork that are the key to squaring a very tricky circle.

Paul includes water in virtually all its appearances and moods. There are clouds reflected in a lily pond, a stream tumbling over rocks, summer and winter, and the hills, meadows, boats and buildings that provide a setting and add perspective. In some of the exercises, water is the main subject, in others more of an adjunct.

There's often no better way of learning than by doing and this book is thoroughly practical throughout. Detailed instruction is kept to a minimum so that you can bring your own personal interpretation to the scene.
