How to Paint Living Portraits Book with Roberta Carter Clark

As a step-by-step guide to capturing a likeness, this is hard to beat. Roberta takes you in detail through the structure of the human body, from facial details to legs, arms and hands. Using simple block diagrams, she shows you how the parts fit together to create poses that look entirely natural. She then explains how to clothe your subject: how fabrics sit and how to create folds and gatherings. This is one of the trickier aspects of portrait painting and she's particularly good here. Progressing to real people, Roberta starts with charcoal drawings to get you used to working with light and tones. You only need move on to colour work when you're completely confident. She works in both oil and watercolour in this final section, capturing her subjects both formally and informally. The book is generously illustrated. All the instructions are admirably clear and easy to follow. Book: Northlight. Paperback. 160 pages
